Living on a river island brings many rewards, but it also means residents should be well-informed about flood risk and ensure they have appropriate insurance in place.
Flood Risk
Heron Island sits on the River Thames at Caversham. The Environment Agency maintains flood risk maps for the area. Residents are encouraged to check their flood risk at GOV.UK Flood Risk Checker.
The island has flood defence measures in place, but it is always prudent to be prepared. The Environment Agency’s Flood Warning Service provides advance notice of flood events — we strongly recommend all residents sign up.
Insurance
Standard home insurance may not fully cover flood damage. When arranging or renewing your home insurance, make sure to:
- Declare that your property is on an island/near a river
- Check whether flood cover is included or requires an add-on
- Consider buildings and contents cover that specifically includes flood damage
- Keep records of your possessions and their value
The Flood Re scheme is a UK flood reinsurance scheme that helps make flood insurance more available and affordable. Ask your insurer whether they participate.
